When the new year strikes, many people look back at the year that was and decide to change something in their lives. By making such resolutions, they pledge to put these bad habits behind them by establishing better ones.

There are some smaller changes that people make that may take little effort. Others are a bit more drastic. Let\’s take a look at some of the bigger ones that also happen to be harder to keep.

When the new year strikes, I always come across people who say that their days with cigarettes are now in the past. I wish things were this easy, because the success rate reveals the opposite.

If only mind over matter held true here. Most smokers sadly fail to follow through with their plans, because quitting cigarettes is obviously a very difficult thing to do.

Another popular new year\’s resolution is the commitment that people make to get into shape. Whether they\’re looking to lose weight or build more muscle, many people make great efforts to set off the new year on a new foot.

As a result, I always take note of the fact that the gym is more crowded than usual during the first month of the year. This can\’t be a coincidence.

Then there are the people who swear that they\’ll cut back on their hours at work, as having fun will climb up their list of priorities.

In a perfect world, we\’d all be able to spend less time working. Unfortunately, reality soon settles in. Whether it has to do with bills we couldn\’t otherwise pay or the fact that our employers require us to put in extra time, we often find ourselves unable to follow through with this commitment.

While all of these things should be doable at some point, a lot of it all depends on timing. It\’s hard to force our will upon ourselves simply because of the time of year. We can accomplish these things at any point in time, and we should never be afraid to make them happen.
