The first drill I love involves using just one target and picking one technique. What you need to do is have one person hold the target and the other person will be the striker. Once again, do the left, then the right, and then switch partners.

On this next drill we are going to use two hand targets, one in each hand. The striker will choose one technique to perform twice or a combination with two techniques. For example, lets say your doing the roundhouse kick, you can do left, right, and then back up and repeat. Each time you complete a combination, that is one count and I suggest you do 10 each side and then swap holders.

These drills are quite obvious theoretically but you will certainly get a great workout once you perform all three of them in a single session. The more focus you’ve got and vigor you devote to each technique, the more improvements you will observe. Start off slow and work up to higher speeds and much more power. I picked up one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ type magazines the other week and got to asking myself where these women actually live, who wear the golf apparel shown in women’s golf magazines? I have never seen women, not even the pros, dressed in such expensive and flamboyant clothes.

It’s easy to spend money kitting yourself out for golf: hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes all add up quickly, even if you shop at the sales. Then factor in equipment, bag and cart and you have to play quite often to keep the “CPU” – cost per use down to an acceptable level.

One glossy advert showed a beautiful model in really short shorts (as if that’s allowed on courses!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That comes to just about $1,500! I know that it would be impossible for me to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near a normal limit in my entire golfing life! Please don’t get me wrong – I do love clothes and I do really, really love shoes, but I could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as most people’s weekly wages.

Granted, you need comfortable golfing shoes that don’t look like an old pair of wooden clogs, but honestly, you will be able to buy less expensive and yet still trendy golfing shoes.

I have a couple of very stylish golfing outfits, although none of them are brand names. If I totalled up the cost of all of them, it would not come to the price of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I’d rather have several trendy outfits than one outrageously priced one.

If I were to wear a $1,500 outfit to play golf in, I would just be too worried about getting it dirty or sweating in it to play a decent game of golf.

The distance it should be depends of what club you are hitting and the type of shot you are trying to produce. This helps the club get the ball releasing on the correct path and into the air.

One swing factor that is often overlooked is how does the backswing kick off? Do the shoulders, hips, torso or hands kick things off? The one and only answer to this question is – the hips. Don’t let your hands lead the way. Moving your hips properly is a key element in producing optimal distance. The hips turn and the upper body, arms and hands can do nothing but follow. But its not just to get things started. You need to finish. And when you get to this point again, the hips need to bring the club the the ball at impact. To recap the sequence – the hips kick off the backswing and downswing with the hands and rest of the body trailing behind. The only place to get good at this is at the driving range. You will not watch improvement in your distance until you understand the hip rotation.

Now, for hitting accurate shots, the one factor this is more important over all the others in hitting straighter drives, has already been mentioned. The hands need to follow the club head on contact. When the club face meets the ball squarely, your hands are a little behind the club head or perhaps even with it. If hooking or slicing the ball is a substantial trouble in your swing, watch your grip. Too strong of one, or one that is too weak, will produce an open face on contact. The best results ordinarily occur with a neutral grip; this will steady the face of the club and prevent it from opening and closing.

Another drill to take note of in the sequence of hitting longer and straighter drives is to have a square stance as you address the ball. There are variations, however. A stance that is slightly open or closed with cause different ball flights. But, having your feet on an even line with each other is the most common practice. This also applies to your hips and shoulders. Accuracy will no longer be an issue once you can get the hang of keeping the body square.
