Yes, home gyms tend to be a bit expensive. However, when compared to the long term price of maintaining a gym membership, they are by far the cheaper option. Traditional gyms also offer little privacy and often workouts can only be done during open hours. This makes purchasing a home gym the best option. If this sounds like the plan for you, take a bit of time and consider some important information.
An important initial step is making sure you have the space for a home gym. Gyms come in a variety of sizes, so you will most likely be able to find one for the room that you have. Ideally, an extra bedroom or a basement would be used. Shop around and look at the square feet that each gym offers, and compare that to the square feet you have available. Don’t merely allow room for set up, you must allow room for the range of motion found in the exercises.
You must make a decision about whether you will utilize free weights or resistance bands. Both have differing benefits and disadvantageous. Resistance bands are probably a better choice for beginners. They also tend to take up less space and essentially do the same thing as free weights. Many also consider bands safer. However, free weights, if understood and used correctly, are also a valid choice.
Although these home gyms are ideal in developing and building muscle mass, they don’t offer much in the way of cardiovascular workouts. Consider getting and additional piece of equipment that will give you the cardio workouts you need. Consider things like stationary bikes or elliptical trainers. However, you can also get a great cardio workout without equipment, utilizing circuit training which will include various activities like push ups and jumping jacks.
Consider purchasing a mat that will act as a comfortable place for you to stretch your muscles. This will grant you flexibility, which is great in toning muscles, as well as help you prevent injuries in the form of pulling muscles or tearing them. Also, be sure that you take a safe approach to your workouts, starting with only a moderate amount of weight and slowly increasing the weight. Lifting too much too quickly can lead to injury.
When you go to shop for your home gym, keep several things in mind. Make sure you pick out a machine that offers a variety of exercises, and that will contribute to all of the major muscle groups.
