If you play golf, then you know it can be one of the most enjoyable, yet at the same time one of the most frustrating games to play. One hole you could be hitting everything perfectly, yet on the next the ball zigging and zagging between the rough and the fairway bunkers. What to do?

The secret to golf, as is the trick to any other hobby, is imagination and visualization. Ask any expert, and they’ll tell you that a giant part of their accomplishment is firm, dependable, visualization. When you visualize something, you are giving straight commands to your subconscious mind on how you want to perform.

Think about a golf swing, a tee shot if you will. Do you think exclusively about what angle you are opening the club face, or how far back to go on the back swing? Do you know precisely what angle with which the club face strikes the ball? Probably not.

If you are like most individuals, you have a unclear idea of what direction you’d like the ball to go in. Then you swing away, and hope for the best. Sadly, this rarely works with any amount of consistency. Now and then you get fortunate, and hit one straight down the heart, other times you don’t even worry yourself looking for your ball.

So how do you tap into your influential subconscious mind to enhance your game? Simple. Unite some potent statements, with some robust visualizations, and repeat them in a calm, almost drowsy state.

For example, if you’d like a better tee-shot, you may say something like this:

I always drive my ball right down the middle of the fairway. Hitting straight shots from the tee is ordinary for me. My associates are jealous of my dependable tee shot.

As you are saying this, visualize your ball going straight down the middle of the fairway. Picture hearing your friends saying what a fantastic shot it is. Imagine how you feel when you hit such a fantastic shot.

The best time to say this to yourself, and make use of your visualization is to get in a relaxed, almost snoozing state. Sit in a comfy chair, take a few deep breaths and close your eyes. Picture seeing the numbers starting with ten, and going down to one. When you get to one, take a number of deep breaths, and just say “relax” to yourself softly.

Then begin to unhurriedly and silently repeat your statement to yourself, while seeing the ball go straight down the middle.

What You Should Keep in your Golfing Bag.

There are many golf bags available; some are designed for fashion, some for utility and some that combine both features. There are big bags, bigger bags and bags so big that they would keep everything I need for a long week-end vacation in one of the side pockets!

As a rule of thumb, you only need a golf bag large enough to hold your clubs, spare balls, your glove, keys, tees, spare pencils, ball markers, a ball retriever, suntan lotion, a plastic mac, and an umbrella.

It is also recommended that you carry in your bag: some tissue paper, sticking plasters and, whether necessary or not, some insect repellant.

A pack of baby-wipes comes in quite handy sometimes, especially if you’re feeling hot or you get sprayed with sand in the bunker – it can be just what you need!

Other things that could come in useful are certain drugs: for instance, antihistamine, if you are allergic to wasp stings or medication to counteract an illness like diabetes (if you suffer from it, that is). It is vital to remember to replace these medicines before their expiry date though.

You should also switch off your mobile phone before stowing it away in one of your golf bag’s side pockets to prevent it from upsetting other players. You have to be considerate to you fellow players and mobile phones on a golf course are considered a nuisance as they are in restaurants.

Knowing that you are prepared for most of the minor problems that can arise while you are out on the course will help you to enjoy your game. And the game is mostly about being relaxed. You are prepared for bee stings, ant bites, blisters and rain, so you can get on with your game safe in that knowledge!

The Golf Shank Blues

The golf shank can be one of the most unnerving shots you can make in golf. determining why you do it and what you can do about it, goes a long way to solving a lot of misery for most golfers. Sometimes these shots can just come out of the blue and sometimes they are a result of some consistently faulty part of your swing. Regardless of which, you will want to know you can actually do something about this problem.

Understanding The Golf Shank

A golf shank is when the heel of the club makes contact with the ball. This is an area otherwise known as the hosel or the shank of the club, hence the term. This is where the shaft of the club meets the head of the club in the heel of the club. This causes the ball to come away to the right of the target and sometimes this means to the extreme right.

Having your body position too close to the ball and your weight on your toes pushing you too far through the ball thereby connecting the heel of the club with the ball. With the swing constricted in this way you may find the club too much to the inside on the back-swing and so end up swinging too much out in front as you come through to connect with the ball.

Standing too upright basically does the same thing in that it shuffles you in too close to the ball,causing your shoulders to swing too horizontally and the back-swing is too narrow and steep, leaving you little room and therefore little choice but to push the heel of club closer to the ball.

What is the Best Remedy For a Golf Shank?

Work on your stance and your set up first. Far too many golfers start to skip the all important set up routine. You see professional golfers who do this everyday for a living, go through a set-up routine before every shot without fail. You weight should be centred from the initial set stance to give you the best hope of transferring that weight correctly through the shot. A lot of golfers will bring their weight forward too much which then pushes the club forward and playing the ball with the heel of the club. Standing too upright will often push you too far forward and constrict your swing.

It is vital that your body maintains the right position as you come through your golf swing to make contact with the ball and this is achieved by ensuring you have the correct arc to your swing. Double check by having your left shoulder over your right knee at the top of your back-swing.

By aiming your club-face slightly inside the line of the ball you will have the toe of the club rather than the heel of the club towards the ball.

Another method to ensure you do not shank the ball is to place a line of tees on the outside of the ball. If you hit the ball without collecting the tees, you have hit the ball at the correct position on the club and you cannot possible hit a golf shank.
