Fashion and Ladies Golf Attire

I picked up one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ type magazines the other week and got to asking myself where these women actually live, who wear the golf apparel shown in women’s golf magazines? I have never seen women, not even the pros, dressed in such expensive and flamboyant clothes.

It’s easy to spend money kitting yourself out for golf: hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes all add up quickly, even if you shop at the sales. Then factor in equipment, bag and cart and you have to play quite often to keep the “CPU” – cost per use down to an acceptable level.

One glossy advert showed a beautiful model in really short shorts (as if that’s allowed on courses!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That comes to just about $1,500! I know that it would be impossible for me to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near a normal limit in my entire golfing life! Please don’t get me wrong – I do love clothes and I do really, really love shoes, but I could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as most people’s weekly wages.

Granted, you need comfortable golfing shoes that don’t look like an old pair of wooden clogs, but honestly, you will be able to buy less expensive and yet still trendy golfing shoes.

I have a couple of very stylish golfing outfits, although none of them are brand names. If I totalled up the cost of all of them, it would not come to the price of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I’d rather have several trendy outfits than one outrageously priced one.

If I were to wear a $1,500 outfit to play golf in, I would just be too worried about getting it dirty or sweating in it to play a decent game of golf.

When you are able to knock longer and straighter drives you will not only become the envy of your golfing buddies, but you will begin to build confidence in your game. Here are a few exercises you can apply that will help tremendously increase your distance and the amount of control you have over the shot.

When it comes to this component of the game, that is, hitting longer and straighter drives, most players want to excel – and for good reason. The primary goal should be, of course, to make a par. But to take it a step further and think about a possible birdie or better yet, an eagle, the distance you can get on your drives is going to determine the outcome you can expect on the hole. A golfer tends to lose the most strokes in his round in one of two places: the drive or the short game. If you slice or hook the ball off the tee you are off target from the get go. So, being accurate as well as long go hand-in-hand.

The combination of mastering both distance and accuracy for longer and straighter drives starts in the address position. An athletic stance is what we are looking to have as you ready yourself to swing the club. check the position of your feet. Are they directly below your shoulders and not outside them? Good. Now, flex the knees a little. Then, you are right on target.

The distance factor in golf, and particularly a straighter drive that flies farther down the fairway, is tied directly to club head speed. Your body will create this power as it twists into the ball. Keep in mind the importance of bending your knees throughout the swing. If you are standing up on the shot as you come into it, your results will be disastrous. As part of your addressing the ball game plan, you will also need to make sure that the ball is forward in your stance. To get yourself into the proper stance, keep the ball more towards your front foot and away from the center. The distance it should be depends of what club you are hitting and the type of shot you are trying to produce. This helps the club get the ball releasing on the correct path and into the air.

One swing factor that is often overlooked is how does the backswing kick off? Do the shoulders, hips, torso or hands kick things off? The one and only answer to this question is – the hips. Don’t let your hands lead the way. Moving your hips properly is a key element in producing optimal distance. The hips turn and the upper body, arms and hands can do nothing but follow. But its not just to get things started. You need to finish. And when you get to this point again, the hips need to bring the club the the ball at impact. To recap the sequence – the hips kick off the backswing and downswing with the hands and rest of the body trailing behind. The only place to get good at this is at the driving range. You will not watch improvement in your distance until you understand the hip rotation.

Now, for hitting accurate shots, the one factor this is more important over all the others in hitting straighter drives, has already been mentioned. The hands need to follow the club head on contact. When the club face meets the ball squarely, your hands are a little behind the club head or perhaps even with it. If hooking or slicing the ball is a substantial trouble in your swing, watch your grip. Too strong of one, or one that is too weak, will produce an open face on contact. The best results ordinarily occur with a neutral grip; this will steady the face of the club and prevent it from opening and closing.

Another drill to take note of in the sequence of hitting longer and straighter drives is to have a square stance as you address the ball. There are variations, however. A stance that is slightly open or closed with cause different ball flights. But, having your feet on an even line with each other is the most common practice. This also applies to your hips and shoulders. Accuracy will no longer be an issue once you can get the hang of keeping the body square.
