Who Are The Basketball Teams To Look Out For In The Upcoming Season
July 27, 2010 by Alex Turner

The 2011 NBA season is shaping up to be an incredibly entertaining one. Who would have that Joe Johnson would walk away the with the highest contract of the offseason when names like Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Bosh and Lebron James were involved. Regardless, there were some big winners and losers.
Here is a look at my predictions of the best teams in the NBA for the upcoming 2011 season.
The Vegas odds makers have the Los Angeles Lakers as the preliminary favorites for the next season. One can only wonder what Kobe Bryant is thinking from the aftermath of the powerhouse that has formed in Miami. If we have learned anything about Kobe Bryant in recent years, it is that he rises to the occasion when challenged.
The Miami Heat, however, are going to give the Lakers serious trouble. Dwayne Wade, coupled with Lebron James and Chris Bosh have created a powerhouse that can officially be called “The New York Yankees of Basketball.” Every team will be hungry to beat the Heat next year.
Besides the Heat next year, another Eastern Conference team that won out is the Bulls organization. Carlos Boozer is one of the best power forwards in the league and fits perfectly with this team. He will join Derek Rose and Joakim Noah to form quite the competitive team.
The Orlando Magic have made it to the Eastern Conference finals the past two years, so they are another team that you should not bet against. They had the second best record in the league last year, next to the now defunct Cleveland Cavaliers.
Another team that could potentially be great next year is the Dallas Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki is there to stay, and he now has experience playing with new additions Caron Butler and Brandon Haywood.
The Portland Trailblazers will also be a very competitive team. Brnadon Roy is a winner and if all goes well, we might actually see a full season from Greg Oden this year.

A Glance At The Lack Of Action Of This Year’s World Cup

This year’s World Cup has gotten off to an interesting start. There are both positives and negatives about the tournament that we will discuss.
I’ll preface this by saying I am a big soccer fan. I want the sport to thrive and hopefully it will catch on in the United States some day. It is just hard to watch when most of these games end with one goal scored.
A new ball, called the Jabulani, was introduced for this year’s World Cup. It is supposed to bend more unpredictably than previous balls, however maybe its possible that its hurting the players goal scoring opportunities more than it is helping it.
Another possible cause of the lack of goals is teams are just playing better defense. There have been less shots on goal, so its possible.
I don’t know if it’s an American thing, but every soccer fan I have spoken to cannot stand the noise makers. If we as viewers are constantly distracted by the sound, how can the players not be? Plus, I don’t see how it benefits either team, it’s a pretty constant noise flow.
Since it is technically winter in South Africa right now, temperatures have dropped. Certain star players have been seen wearing long sleeved shirts and you can visibly see people exhaling air. Maybe the conditions aren’t what most of the players are used to.
There have been a few shining moments in the tournament so far, however. The United States and South Africa both showed up in their first games, tying the favorites England and Mexico, respectively.
Unfortunately for South Africa, it looks like they will not make it out of the first round. The host country played brilliantly against Mexico the other day, resulting in a 1-1 tie. But today they lost to Uruguay in a crushing 3-0 loss.
