Panic Attack Causes Vol. 3: Put Down That Cake Or Your Head Might Explode

I don’t know about you, but I love sweets. They taste so good it’s hard to imagine that they could be one of the major causes of panic attacks. My parents live in Orlando and there’s a place in downtown Winter Park called The Briar Patch that makes homemade cakes and ice cream. Mind you, the slices of cake are the size of your head. My two all-time favorite sugary indulgences? Bananas foster, set on fire right next to the table and dribbled down to my waiting ice cream. And of course, homemade red velvet cake.

I recall one visit in particular when I ate a little more red velvet cake than I should have; I felt like I was going to explode because I couldn’t get comfortable my airplane seat. Silly, I know. But for anyone prone to panic attacks, putting refined sugars in your body is one of the worst things you can do.

Now it’s clear that the causes of panic attacks are numerous; stresses in your life, amount of rest, physical condition, diet, and mental health all contribute to the likelihood that you’ll suffer from panic attacks. As far as diet is concerned, there are three things you must avoid to give yourself the greatest chance of success to avoid ever having a panic attack again. The “terrible three” are caffeine, alcohol, and sugar. In other articles I go into depth about caffeine and alcohol. For the moment, suffice it to say that they are all bad Very bad.

So why is sugar so bad? Sure sugar does taste great but its loaded with negligible ingredients and has empty calories. Sadly, sugar also raises blood lactate levels which lends itself directly to instability. Imagine this: you eat a bunch of sugar and you become hyperactive. Now you are emotionally unbalanced. And where you may have normally had a shot of talking yourself down off the ledge when you started to get that anxious feeling, now you’re almost a slave to your blood sugar level and will more likely fall off the ledge.

Though there may literally be hundreds of things that can trigger a panic attack, the root cause is usually the same thing – our thoughts. Typically we’ll lose control of a thought then our bodies react in that dreaded flight or fight response that we recognize as a panic attack. Luckily, modifying our diet can make our bodies less sensitive. The benefits you’ll enjoy by limiting the amount of refined sugar in your diet are twofold. The first benefit is that you will be less anxious and therefore less likely to have a panic attack. The second benefit is that by consciously taking a step to stop panic attacks by limiting the sugar in your diet, you have taken control. In your mind YOU KNOW that you are no longer as susceptible to panic attacks. Because panic attacks are primarily mental, simply believing that you can’t have a panic attack is super powerful.

So am I suggesting giving up all refined sugars? If possible, why not? There are plenty of sugar free alternatives out there now. Though some come with their own warning labels, I have yet to see anything bad about Stevia. If you can’t give up refined sugars, just learn to seriously limit them. Try to eliminate ALL the dietary causes of panic attacks. It will make a difference to your health, waistline and overall mood. Most importantly, it could help you regain control of your life.

You need to be aware that your levels of alertness and arousal are much higher when an anxiety attack takes place and having too much caffeine in your diet only stimulates this more.

Tip 3 – You Need To Exercise – Many anxiety attack sufferers do not realize that by exercising regularly they will find that they are better able to prevent attacks taking place. When you have an anxiety attack your adrenaline and energy levels increase and exercise will help to bring these back down to a level that is more normal and so prevent the attack from getting any worse.

Also just as with the techniques used to control your breathing through exercise you will be able to focus your mind on something other than the anxiety attack that is taking place.
