Home Air Conditioning

If you live in a hot country, or even one that merely has hot summers, it is just lovely to be able to sit in your home without sweltering. In particular at night as being too hot can prevent you from getting a decent night’s rest. Likewise, when you are at work. We all know the pleasure of walking into a cool, air conditioned building, like a bank on a hot summer’s day.
Total air conditioning like this used to be the prerogative of office blocks and the very wealthy, but it is becoming more general now. In fact, if you already have ducting all the way through your house to be used in association with a central heating system, a total air conditioning system could cost as little as $4,000.
I know that $4,000 is not an insignificant amount, but if you do not have the ducting already, you can add another $3,000 to $4,000. These figures refer to a typical three or four bedroomed house or apartment.
A total air conditioning system like this will usually be adequate for seven rooms in one or two zones, which could be two small bungalows next door to each other or a house and a garage or shed. One good point about total air conditioning is that the whole house or just the ground floor can be cooled at the same time so that you can walk around the house as you normally would.
This is in direct disparity with split systems which only cool one room – every time you go out of the room, you let cool air out and warm air in, which makes the air conditioning system work more and costs you more money.
Total air conditioning has other less well-known advantages too. It reduces the humidity in a room or house by drying the air as it is returned to the unit for cooling and sophisticated units have filters with additional functions. The more advanced the system, the more germs, bacteria and other substances (like pollen) the built-in filter will do away with.
Because these filters can remove airborne substances they can significantly reduce a person’s affliction from allergies. Good air filtration can help asthma and hay fever sufferers considerably, if the filters are kept spotless.
In general, a total air conditioning system is divided into two major components ? an outdoor condenser and compressor and an indoor evaporator in an air circulating system. The air distribution, or air handling system filters and dries the cooled air, and distributes it, via ductwork, to several rooms. Total air conditioning is usually much quieter than split air conditioners, because the noise of the latter’s compressor is so much closer to where the cool air is needed.
It is far better to take the ducting into consideration at the design stage of a new house as part of its heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, but it can be put in later. A first-class HVAC system should be designed to supply adequate cooling, heating, and ventilation, taking into consideration such factors as the dimensions of the building, the efficiency of its insulation and the regional climate.

The Many Benefits Of Allergy Free Foods

Having a food allergy brings with it the knowledge of how critical it is to avoid the food or foods that one has an allergic reaction to. In just a matter of minutes after consuming a food allergen, a life-endangering reaction can take place. Allergens in foodstuffs are not always obvious, and therefore not always easy to avoid. Enjoying the benefits of allergy free foods means knowing for certain that there will be no surprises in the foods you eat.
Estimates are that around 2 percent of adults and from 4 to 8 percent of babies and children are sensitive to one or more food allergens. In recent years it seems that these numbers are increasing for young people. Visits to emergency rooms for severe food allergic reactions number around 30,000 each year for Americans. From these figures, it seems obvious that the more closely one can control the quality of one’s food with regards to allergens, the better.
An allergic reaction to food will usually take place within an hour of eating it, and sometimes in only minutes. An itching in the mouth or elsewhere is one of the milder symptoms, but reactions can be very serious, as in anaphylactic shock, and even fatal if not treated soon enough. Unfortunately, while some food allergies can be outgrown, there is no way to cure them.
Only eight substances are the cause of approximately 90 percent of allergic reactions. Included are tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, fish, milk, wheat, egg and soy. It is usually easy to avoid consumption of some of these, such as fish, and also shellfish. But, when an allergen is used as an ingredient in other foods, it may be harder to detect. Soy, milk, egg and wheat are commonly incorporated into various food products. Items such as Asian sauces and different candies may contain peanuts, which are very dangerous for some people.
An important United States law was passed in 2004, known as FALCPA. This act required food companies to clearly state on their labels if the product includes any of the 8 major allergy-causing substances. However, the law did not require the manufacturers to include information regarding possible cross-contamination of foods processed by equipment used for several different types of foods, perhaps including known allergens.
Cross-contamination statements have been included voluntarily on labels by some food processors. But, there remains some potential risk when purchasing foods that are made for consumers in general, without regard to allergies. For some people, only a tiny amount of a substance is necessary for a very serious reaction to occur. Products made specially for those with food allergies are more likely to be safe to eat.
Obviously one may, if in doubt about a particular food item, contact the manufacturing company about ingredients included, or the possibility of cross-contamination with allergens. There is, however, a much higher comfort level knowing that a company manufactures foods specifically for those with food allergies. Among the benefits of allergy free foods is the greater degree of safety one can reasonably expect from foods processed this way.

Air Filters: My Tips For Buying The Best

If you have any kind of air purification system installed in your house or office, you will have to change the air filters at some time or another. I am not only talking about dedicated equipment that only purifies the air here, but also air conditioning units like you would find at home, in the office or even in the car. The theory is the same for all.
So, you may be operating an air purifier without even realizing it, but in that case, especially if it is an older one, it could be doing you more harm than good. This is because a dirty filter will be blowing unpurified air into the room at best, but in the worst case scenario, it might even be blowing contaminated air at you. Modern air filters do not only stop flies or even pollen from getting into the set-up through the air intake, they go as far as trying to block common germs too.
So, you have two options. If you have never replaced or cleaned your air filter or if you did not even realize you had one and the air conditioner or air purifying apparatus is over a year old, you should do something about it right away. Begin by reading the handbook. If you do not have one go on line and look to see if there is any information on your model at the maker’s website or even just anywhere on the Internet. If on the other hand, you have been cleaning and changing your filter methodically, consider getting a better quality filter next time.
You can go about locating the best brands of air filters for your particular type of unit by writing down any serial numbers and identification numbers and names. The brand and model are very helpful too. You have two choices here too. If you like going around the shops, take this information with you and ask about the best filters in several outlets A large DIY or department store could probably assist here. Write every name and fact they give you down on paper and take it home. I prefer to go on the Internet first and take that information around the shops.
Confirm what they have told you on the Internet. Check it with the maker’s web site and compare prices. Decide what you want to buy and where from. Get a year’s stock in one go, it saves a lot of bother. Three or four units should last a year, if they are cleanable.
A high quality air filter will work better than a cheaper one. It will trap more pollutants, including smoke and fumes – even some microorganisms, if it has been impregnated with a germicide. Many come with a long-lasting mild air freshener too, which will save you buying sprays.
Better quality air filters will save you money and bother by lasting longer in good serviceable condition. Cheaper ones may say they last as long, but the germicide and the air freshener may have evaporated within a week or two. Try to get a filter that is cleanable. The best ones can be cleaned two of three times before they have to be changed. If it is three times then it will last four months, meaning that you only need three a year at most.
If you have purchased an unknown make of air conditioner or purifier, there is a good chance that it was still made by one of the big names or it a copy of a famous name, in which case a better filter may still fit into it. In this situation, take your old filter to the shop with you to get it compared.

Tips On Eating A Gluten Free Diet When Traveling

Let us face it. It is so hard to stick to any sort of a diet when we are traveling. Some of us have to. Some of us cannot have gluten and therefore, you might need some help. Help with what? You might need some help with eating a gluten free diet when traveling. Let us give you some tips about how to do this.
The first thing you can do is if you are eating at certain places. Call ahead. Sometimes you can do this if you are eating aboard a plane. This can be done when you are taking a cruise. This can even be done if you are staying at a hotel and you order room service. There is no harm in it.
Another tip that we can give for you who are the ones who need help with eating a gluten free diet when traveling is to pack snacks. As you know with traveling, almost anything can happen. If you have those gluten free snacks that you like so much like nuts handy, then if for some reason or another you get delayed, you have something to munch on if you find yourself feeling a little off due to hunger.
When you travel to another country, you might have to try explaining to the waiter what the disease is that you have and you might have to figure out how to explain to them that you cannot eat anything with gluten in it. Yet, you might wonder how you do this. One method is going to a few sites that you can find when you go to a search engine. These cards explain everything in detail in a few languages so you are able to communicate that you cannot have gluten.
Some people will tell you to ask the waiter. They might be able to cook something up with the kitchen staff so that you are able to enjoy a meal without all the gluten. Some of the restaurants might not list everything that a meal has in it. So as to help yourself, ask what is in it and other questions that you need to ask. When you explain why you need to do this, the waiter should be very understanding.
As you are not familiar with the area, sometimes you can ask around. You never know that someone might have the same issue as you. The locals of an area are not only helpful in telling you the hot spots, but they can also tell you of some places that you might benefit from when it comes to a gluten free diet.
The last thing is to go when there is not a crowd. This is what you should also ask the locals so you can beat the crowds. This benefits you because if there are not a whole bunch of people in front of you, the kitchen is a lot better at working with you to get a gluten free order. They will not have as many orders to fill which will allow you to have the meal you need and them the customers they want.
As you can see, just by doing your research, you can find some great places who are willing to cater to your needs. Make sure you do this research so you are not stuck. Work with places as sometimes in different cultures, it is hard to understand a gluten free diet because their culture values gluten. Just remember these tips and getting what you need should be rather easy.

Tips For Cooking For Children And A Gluten Free Diet
March 30, 2010 by Jimmy Smith
The hardest part of being a parent is to find that there is something wrong with our child no matter how big or small ti is. This means that it is somehow going to be hard on our child. So, to make it easier, we have looked at one situation that some parents struggle with. This is children and a gluten free diet. This is hard to do when you think of all the things that a normal kid is supposed to eat. So, here are a few tips to make the transition a lot easier.
The first thing that you need to remember is that children know when they are different. It might be a slight difference, but any difference can make a child feel out of place. This is especially true when they do not know what is going on. That is why you as the parent needs to educate them. You need to teach them about the foods that they can consume and the ones that they need to stay away from.
When you are cooking for a child that needs to have a gluten free diet, you need to plan your meals ahead of time. Just like when you cook for any ordinary child you need to make sure that you have all the ingredients. Now, you might think this is easy, but when you look at the list of things that these children cannot have, then you are in for a rude awakening.
When you have a discussion with your child as to what he or she can and cannot have, you might need to show them. This is fine. How much information or what sort of discussion you have depends on the age. If they are older, they might have a few questions that you’ll need to answer.
The best way to treat children like this is to make the things that they like. Just find a way to make it gluten free. Some of the more easier dishes that they like to eat are spaghetti and things of that nature. They will find that if they cannot eat the foods of other children, then there really is a difference.
Gluten free foods have come a long way. That is for sure. They are starting to taste more like the normal thing more and more each day. This is a good thing as it helps children make the transition and helps them to feel that they are just as normal as any other child.
The thing to remember is that if everyone else is eating something around the child, then you need to make it fair. Find a way to make it gluten free so that the child can eat it too. They already know that something is different. There is no need to make it worse for them. You can even allow them to help you make it.
When you do these things, you help your child all the way around. A child is very vulnerable at that age. Any age as a child can be vulnerable. When you throw in a different diet into the mix that makes them stand out it can be very hard. Allowing the child to help make his or her own meal as well as giving them a card for those who might not know of their condition can help them steer away from gluten.

Add just enough water to mix it into a smooth but not runny concoction. This does does not need yeast. Then pour the mix into a bread pan and put into a pre heated oven at 350 degrees for about an hour. Then remove it from the oven and let cool. This is a great tasting bread that is gluten free.

Air Conditioning Maintenance Advice
March 10, 2010 by Owen Jones
Air conditioning units will work for many years with very little trouble, if you keep your apparatus properly maintained. However, this is not peculiar to home air conditioning systems. Nearly everything we do these days can be done with the assistance of a mechanical or electrical device. However, some things are non-user maintainable and will break down after a while.
Home air conditioning units are intended to last a long time, as long as they are correctly maintained. If you are loathe to do this maintenance yourself, you will need to call in a professional, but there is a lot of maintenance anyone can perform. Even the most ham-fisted klutz. If you carry out these straightforward cool air conditioning tips, you will only need a professional’s help once every two years, which will save you a lot of money.
There are three fundamental varieties of fixed home air conditioning units: central air conditioners; split air conditioners and room air conditioners. There is also a fourth category, the portable conditioner, but there are too many types of these to generalize.
Central Air Conditioners – this is made up of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. You can clean or change the air filter in the indoor apparatus according to its type. Wire filters can be cleaned, glass fibre filters must be replaced. You ought to do this monthly during the hot season in order to maintain peak performance and air quality.
You should also clean any dust or grease from the fan blades. Lightly oil the fan shaft and any bearings too. If your system is belt driven make sure that the belt is not worn and that it is neither too tight nor too slack, which means that there should be some give, but that it should not be so loose as to slip. Like a car’s fan belt. Degrease and clean the coil of tubing.
The outside system should be treated in the same manner as the inside box, but you ought to also clear any undergrowth or rubbish from around it to permit an unrestricted airflow. If it is in direct sunlight while in operation, erect a lean-to to give it shade and shelter from rain and snow in the winter.
Split Air Conditioning Systems – the outdoor component should be serviced as above, but the indoor air handler is different as there is no fan pushing air through a structure of ducts. At least once a year, remove the internal filter and wash it or clean it according to the maker’s instruction manual. If you do this often enough, you will not have to clean the coil.
If you miss a few maintenance sessions, clean the coil as above. Service the outside box as above as well.
Room Air Conditioners – take out the grille and wash or replace the filter at least once every summer. Filters can normally be washed three times and then ought to be replaced. If you fail to do this, you will have to wash the coil, as above. In the winter, cover the grille with cling film or a tarp, to prevent cold drafts.

I Get Pet Allergies – May I Nevertheless Keep A Pet?
There are so many triggers for allergies, and allergens are all around us. Some are related to dust and pollen, and other triggers can be from pets. Do you know what you\’re actually allergic to? Here are some of the allergy symptoms caused by animals.
The most noticeable sign that you have an allergy to pets, is that when you come into contact with them, you start getting all the symptoms that hay fever sufferers do. For some even more severe cases, breathing difficulties might occur, from just touching a pet\’s bed, or cushion.
Just like people who are hyper-sensitive to pollen or dust mites, itchy or red eyes can also be attributed to allergies caused by pets. You might also experience tearing of the eyes as well and they can come about if you rub your eyes after touching a dog or a cat. To be more accurate, the pet hairs are not the culprit, but the pet dander.
If you\’ve never heard of the word \”dander\” before, I\’ll explain it. Dander\’s similar to dandruff on human scalps and but they\’re much smaller flakes of skin, so small that it isn\’t obvious to the naked eye.
Pet pollen can easily spread through any household environment, and they can sit around a home for several weeks or months if not cleaned thoroughly. This is why people can still get reactions when entering a home even without the dog or cat being present.
Does this mean that allergy sufferers cannot own a dog or a cat? No, in fact, they can. If you decide that you really want to have a pet at home, you will need to select specific breeds of dogs or cats that are hypoallergenic – yes there is really such a thing. The Maltese and Australian Terrier are just 2 examples of hypoallergenic dogs.
If you really must live with a pet and there is no other choice, consider having an air filter. These air purifying units aren\’t cheap and can cost you as much as $1000 and over, however if it might be the only solution you have left.
There are several types of purifiers in the market and you might find small portable air cleaners for your room, and larger units for the entire house.
If perhaps you\’re scouting about for a remedy for allergy symptoms and to filter the air of pollutants, you can get more advice for home air purifiers and also other great manufacturers of dust air purifiers.

If you feel bloated or lethargic after eating you may need to be on a gluten free diet. We all eat too much at times and then we feel tired of so full we have to lie down. This happens now and again. But if this is a regular feeling for you then you might be allergic to gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, and barley, and in rye. It is the part of the wheat that makes bread dough gooey.
However it is also the ingredient in wheat that causes the immune system to attack the body’s digestion system. Several men and women have this sensitivity and do not know it. If fact one out of every 150 people in the U. S. Has this problem with a gluten allergy. It is not easy to avoid eating gluten. Wheat is in a lot of common foods, breads, pastries, cereals.
But if you consciously try to eat gluten free you can. The key is to realize you have a problem and work around it, or eat around it as in this case. But there are now many restaurants who are offering gluten free dishes on their menus. If you have any type of symptoms like bloating or pain in your abdomen after eating you might have gluten sensitivity. The problem is that this type of condition is very difficult to diagnose. Your doctor might have you cut out various foods to see which one is causing you the problem.
Abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea are no fun. But until the correct diagnosis is made you have to suffer. But today with as many people suffering from gluten sensitivity many doctors are suspecting this earlier on. Then you can take steps to change your diet.
