The Different Types Of Whey Protein Explained

What is the Whey Protein supplement for? The most popular nutritional supplement on the market today for sports athletes and bodybuilders is whey protein. Frequently, nutritionists suggest that you should include at least one whey protein drink per day. With allo the different types of whey protein out there, what should one look for? Whey Proteins popularity began to grow in the nineties. Back then, egg protein had a foothold in the market as the number 1, but whey protein changed that. Many studies were carried out and research undertaken which proved that whey protein had improved protein synthesis compared to the older egg protein.

Why should I include whey protein in my diet? * It has a high biological value (BV) which means a high amount of the actual protein from whey is absorbed into the body, compared to other foods. * The nine essential amino acids (EAAs – indispensable amino acids) are all included in whey protein. * Whey protein also has high amounts of the three branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) – valine, isoleucine and leucine, all are essential for muscle growth and repair in the body.

How quickly is this protein absorbed? Due to the shorter chain amino acids in whey protein, they tend to be absorbed and digested very quickly This can be an advantage, particularly when protein is in high demand, typically post workout, for example. Absorption rates for the different classes of protein supplements are as follows: WPH: 15mins, WPI: 30mins, WPC: 1hour

What are the different classes of Whey Protein I can buy? WPC (Whey Protein Concentrate): Ultra-filtration is the process used to produce whey protein. The protein is made by taking milk and separating out the lactose and fat through a porous membrane. This typically leaves a product which is 68-80% protein. Whey Concentrate has been processed to a lesser degree that other proteins, making it not the purest whey protein out there. However, do not be mistaken, it is still a very high quality protein powder. The remaining part of the product is made up of small amounts of fat and carbs. For the normal trainer this type of powder will usually suffice. The advantage of WPC over the other powders is that due to it having had less processing, manufacturers can sell it at a cheaper price when compared to whey protein isolate or hydrolysate.

WPI (Whey Protein Isolate): This type of whey protein has had even more processing and filtering than WPC. The result is a purer high protein content. WPI is usually around 85-95% protein – those following a strict diet that are wanting to keep fat/carb levels to a minimum will often choose this type of powder. WPI can also be useful for those that are severe lactose intolerance as it contains significantly less lactose than Whey Concentrate.

Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH): When WPC or WPI go through a hydrolysis process, WPH is made. Smaller peptides are produced when the longer protein chains are broken down. The make-up of Whey is short peptides, but hydrolysis makes them even shorter. It is known as ‘pre-digesting’ the protein before consumption. This makes it easier on the digestive system, and the protein is absorbed at a faster rate. WPH is often touted as the best post-workout protein around, but that comes at expense. The best protein to take post-workout is WPH, as the body absorbs it very quickly. This is due to it being more digested than any other whey protein.

Which Protein Powder should I choose? With the many different variations protein powders and brands available on the internet and beyond, it can be confusing which to choose. You have to consider which aspects are important to you as an individual. Price is usually the biggest factor, if this is the case, WPC is the obvious choice and does the job well.

The introduction of whey protein is often touted as being a revolution for bodybuilders and athletes alike. Of course there are other proteins such as casein,soya and egg proteins, which all have their place. Eating different types of meats in your diet are also essential proteins too. Many uses will blend the many types of protein into their diet so they have a wide variation which is often useful. A slow digesting protein called casein is absorbed into the body at a slower rate. This can be useful overnight for example, to supply the body with a steady supply of amino acids when the user is asleep and cannot eat. This would help to prevent muscle breakdown during the fasting period overnight.

There are lots of factors that need to be considered in our quest to grow bigger muscles. Will a slightly quicker absorption of protein make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. A healthy diet and hard training has got to be more important. The idea of whey protein is to supplement your diet but your intake from ‘real food’ is still crucial if you want to grow. Taking this into consideration, most of us will want to use Whey Protein Concentrate to gain muscle and improve your physic. If you have more money to spend then maybe using a purer powder, will give you an edge over your competitors. The rest of us though, the Average Joe, need to consider if WPI or WPH are worth the extra cash to meet our training goals.
