The organic food craze has officially taken over, and that’s not a bad thing. Organic food is a phenomenon which provides many benefits for consumers. However, there are still many misconceptions about what the organic label really means when it comes to meat.
We have a tendency to think that only the healthiest and most pristine foods can obtain an organic label. It seems to suggest that those foods are free of anything other than the purest materials from nature, and that the food’s production is free of the cost-cutting and ultimately dangerous measures of the large-scale food industry.
When it comes to vegetables, that’s probably an accurate description of what the organic label entails. However, meat is a different story; things might not be quite as pure as the organic label suggests.
For example, the USDA says that any wild fish can legally be labeled organic. However, this doesn’t address the fact that fish often contains heavy metals such as mercury.
In terms of livestock, the USDA’s rules for an organic label say nothing about the welfare standards of these animals. They may be subjected to poor living conditions, yet can still be labeled as organic.
The organic label does address the types of foods that can be fed to animals raised for meat. The USDA doesn’t allow meat to obtain an organic label if the animals are fed substances such as hormones, antibiotics, and other chemicals. So the organic label does ease our fears that we may be ingesting foreign substances along with our meat, but it does nothing to assure us that the animals lived a healthy and happy life.
If you have to choose between organic or non-organic meat, the organic meat will always be a better choice. If you’d like to buy meat with more stringent regulations, however, especially concerning the living conditions of the animals, look for meats with other labels, such as biodynamic certifications and the RSCPA label.
The misconceptions concerning organic meat require not only that the regulations be stiffened, but also that consumers become more educated about what these labels mean.
