How To Avoid Snacking Habitually

Knowing how to avoid snacking habitually is important. Snacks are always available, which is why many have such a habit. The Surgeon General reports that America is facing an obesity epidemic and snacking is a big part of the problem. It can be difficult to avoid snacking, but here are some ideas:

1) Water! Less snacks and more water. Water can take the place of snacks in your stomach, filling you up and leaving you without the desire for unhealthy foods. You can preempt your snacking habit by drinking a glass or two of water every couple hours.

2) Decrease the overall size of each meal, and snack ever y couple hours after each meal. This will decrease your overall caloric intake while speeding up your metabolism. Your “snacks” will become “small meals” and will be healthy for you, too!

3) Stay away from food. This is easier than it sounds. Snacking is usually a byproduct of sitting next to work while completing some other kind of activity. Stay away from an area with food, and the notion of snacking will be less obvious.

4) Only purchase foods that require preparation. It’s easy to snack on chocolate, because you do not need to make it yourself! Buy foods that require more effort to make, and you will be less likely to snack.

5) At the supermarket, only buy the food that requires attention and preparation. Foods that require an extra step to prepare are harder to snack on. This means purchasing less chocolate and candy and more rice, because it is much more difficult to snack on rice.

6) Eat full meals less often, and add a bit more healthy food to your “snack” time. Doctors suggest eating 4-6 times a day, with each meal spread a couple hours apart. This is often caused grazing and is thought to keep your energy levels more in balance. You will have a higher energy level this way and be healthier overall.
