What are skin tags? They are tiny pieces of especially thick skin attached to the outside layer of your body. Made of collagen deposits and blood vessels locked inside a bigger piece of skin, these skin growths are simply an overgrowth that happens in the outmost part of your flesh. Because these skin growths ordinarily protrude from your body as if hanging off of it, the familiar name given to these pesky things is skin tags. These are termed filoforms, acrochordons and cutaneous papillom by medical professionals.

These unsightly skin growths can appear on any part of the body. The most common locations for skin tags happen to be creased areas (like the armpits, eyelids and neck), or places prone to frequent rubbing from clothing, like your groin and chest. While normally between 1.5 and 5 millimeters in size, it is possible to have a larger tag. They can be the same color as your flesh or have a somewhat darker coloring. Whether hanging by a peduncle (a thin piece of skin which attaches the tag to your flesh) or simply protruding from your body, the shape of these skin growths also varies.

Many people who suffer from these unsightly skin growths wonder what causes skin tags. Although there are a few known possible causes for them, medical professionals don’t even know for certain what causes skin tags. Because of this, no specific advice has been made on how to avoid them.

Those who suffer from being heavily overweight show a greater risk of having these skin conditions. Constant variations in insulin levels also seems to increase the prevalence of these bothersome spots, so a high amount of expecting mothers have them. Another factor seems to be age, as the greatest number of skin growths appear in people who are in their middle age.

Irritating and hideous are some of the words used to describe skin tags by those who have them. Although they are superficially distasteful, these spots are completely aesthetic, posing no issues to your health. As they are not cancerous, you don’t have to remove them, but you can do so if you wish. You can cut them off with the use of sterile scissors or clippers by yourself. It is recommended for your safety, however, that you instead find a topical cream or treatment to ingest or consult a medical professional to perform the removal for you.

Skin growths are among the most common health issues faced by many people today. Common skin problems include moles, skin tags, boils and warts. These can either be caused by bacteria or viruses or be inborn. Most of these skin growths are benign but some can be cancerous, so it is wise to do something about these growths.
