Many have weighed in on the problem of obesity. It has, undoubtedly, earned its name “obesity epidemic.” The problem continues to flare out of control even amidst increased awareness.

It’s difficult to deal with the problem simply and directly because experts theorize that there is more than one cause. One potential cause of obesity is genetic. This means that it is inherited down family lines. Many are aware that obesity/weight issues tend to run in families. This makes many agree that the problem is biologic. Some argue against this theory due to statistics that indicate only the chance of a child of obese parents experiencing similar weight issues is only 25 to 30%.

Others believe that the increased risk is a combination of biologic and cultural factors. In addition to inheriting genes, children are learning eating and activity habits from their family. Poor eating habits and poor nutritional choices can lead to weight issues and negative health repercussions.

Cultural factors are a major problem when it comes to the obesity epidemic. Society accepts and even prizes high fat, high sugar and high calorie food. Many regard huge portion sizes as advantageous. A large portion of society does not exercise regularly.

Increases in emotional problems in today’s society has also done its part to help the obesity epidemic spread throughout the nation. Stress, boredom, anxiety, anger, depression, etc. can all lead to heavy overeating that can become habitual. These mental/emotional issues are more prevalent in today’s society.

The cause of the obesity epidemic cannot be pinpointed to one particular habit or issue. The epidemic was created from a wide group of bad habits and negative social structures. In order to eliminate the problem society’s rules must change. Individuals must make long term changes to their daily eating and cooking habits in order to make lasting change to their weight and therefore, their health.

Amelia Handley majored in exercise science in college with a minor in Nutrition. Yet she still found herself veering from diet to diet in order to control her weight. With HCG Diet Direct she’s found a program that allows her to combine her desire to control her own body weight with her education and not feel off balance.
