Dumbbells are a type of free weight equipment used for weight training purposes. Dumbbells can be used either individually or in pairs (one in each hand)
There are three main types of dumbbells:
1. Fixed weight dumbbells : These are dumbbell weights created in a dumbbell shape.
2. Adjustable dumbbells: These are metal bars with additional weight disks slid into the outer part of the metal rod and fixed with a screw or a clip. The adjustable dumbbells are the most preferred ones. But the time consumed in loading these dumbbells can be really high. This holds true especially when one intends to perform various exercises related to dumbbells.
3. Selectorized dumbbells: These are adjustable dumbbell whose weight can be changed mechanically with the help of a selector pin or a turning dial rather than manually adding or removing the plates like in the case of the simple adjustable dumbbells. As a result, the disadvantage of excess time utility in the loading process of adjustable dumbbells is overcome here.
Dumbbell exercises are some of the most important strength training programs. These exercises are used for various strength building elements like maximal strength, hypertrophy, strength endurance and explosive power.
Dumbbell workouts activate the smaller stabilizing muscles while the resistance machines act on the muscle group on a very strict movement. As a result of this strict movement, the resistance machines strengthen only a certain part of the muscle group, neglecting the smaller muscles.
Dumbbells are more sports specific and help to develop a balanced physique. Dumbbells make movements easy because they are made to fit around your body very well.
Based on the major muscle group in the body, various dumbbell workouts are designed:

The dumbbell exercises have proven to be enormously helpful in increasing strength, losing excess body fats and sculpting a healthy physique. The dumbbell exercises reduce the body fat and thus also increase the cardiovascular strengths. Along with being so advantageous for health, dumbbells are also very cost effective. One does not need to buy the expensive exercising machines for developing the correct physique. The highly economical and easy to store dumbbells can be an apt choice.
But there are some disadvantages of the dumbbells as well. Several sets of dumbbells are required for the various types of dumbbell workouts. Also, a high variety of dumbbell sets are available in the market, and buying the wrong one, due to lack of knowledge might just be a worthless expense.
As an exercising tool, particularly for exercising at home, dumbbells are a worth buy if you buy the correct kind of the dumbbell set as per your preferred dumbbell workouts.
