It is possible to note that the cross-section of straight hair is round while that of curly/wavy hair if flat and almost oval shaped when we closely examine different types of hair. The reason why curly hair dries faster and thins out quicker, is because it has fewer dimensions than straight hair and therefore damages easily. It is in our best interests, therefore, to learn as much as we can about the life span and strength of our hair to be able to take protective measures and care for it well.

A close examination of a hair strand will reveal how it is embedded into the skin where the hair follicles are. The first layer or papilla connects through the capillaries or bulbs to the blood stream. We notice that two protective sheaths are found at the hair shaft. While one runs along the hair follicle and stops near the sebaceous gland, the other starts from the glad and ends at the muscle known as erector pili.

Keratin or dead cells of proteins make up the hair follicles. The medulla is the inner layer and the cortex covers most of the hair follicles. The color of hair is decided at the cortex layers. There are several layers that overlap at the cuticle which is why hair looks lustrous at this layer. It is interesting to learn about the composition of hair especially when I am interested to learn how to grow my hair fast.
