Some Facts Concerning Cholesterol And Triglycerides

June 23, 2011 by

Cholesterol has a bad press to be sure, but this is because the press does not normally give the full story. It is easier and scarier to leave a couple of bits out. The fact is that we have to have cholesterol and triglycerides for that matter in order to live normally. The point where these fats get to be a problem is when we have too high a percentage of them in our blood.

This is a comparable situation to having a lot of sugar in the blood on a regular basis, which is otherwise called diabetes. A different word for this is hyperglycaemia and hyperglycaemia can be a cause of having too many triglycerides in the blood as well, which by the way is known as hypertriglyceridemia. ‘Hyper’ meaning ‘too much’.

Cholesterol and triglycerides are the two main fats in our blood system. Cholesterol and triglycerides come from the foodstuffs that we consume, but our own bodies create them too. Cholesterol is crucial for several basic bodily functions like regulating hormones and making bile.

Having said that, there are two types of cholesterol: low and high density cholesterol. The low end can go very low and the lower it goes the worse it is for you. This is a very complicated topic which is better explained in a longer article, but all you have to keep in mind is that low density or LDL is bad and high density cholesterol is ‘better’.

This is a very simplistic description, but it is the one that we are told about in the popular press. HDL cholesterol is believed to help mop up LDL cholesterol, which is why it is called good.

If this natural process does not take place or goes out of balance, the LDL cholesterol waxy fat will stick to the walls of arteries making them thinner, narrower. This is known as atherosclerosis (furring of the arteries) and means that the heart has to pump blood harder in order to get oxygen to each part of the body.

This is known as hypertension or high blood pressure and puts the heart at risk of stress and failure – coronary heart disease and stroke are the possible consequences of furred arteries.

There is a lot that you can do to adjust any concerns with your cholesterol levels. Most of our cholesterol comes from eating red meat and full-fat dairy products, so merely by replacing every other steak with a salad could hugely reduce your problem. There are other ways of doing this too, like exercise.

Exercise is a useful way of burning up the excess fats in your blood stream, but it has to be carried out on a regular basis. Not that it takes much. If you think about what you eat and reduce the foods heavy in cholesterol, you might merely require 30 minutes moderate exercise a day in order to be healthy.

The fact is that if you do not do something about your state of affairs, you will be placed on tablets for the rest of your life. You may think that this is a good alternative to diet and exercise, but it is not really. It is just the simple option.

Sum Office Chairs

People who work in offices frequently spend many hours a day seated at their desks, those same people, together with people who do not work in an office, then often go home after work and use a home office or surf the Internet for hours. It is the same story with children. This might add up to a lot of bad posture and a lot of bad backs in the near future, especially among today’s children, whose bones are still developing and growing.

The fact is just that a lot of chairs used for office work are either unsuitable or the people who use them do not know how important it is to adjust their chair to suit their body shape. A good chair, a real, ergonomic chair, will practically force you to adopt a good posture, which will hugely reduce the likelihood of you getting an industrial injury. And a bad back caused by an ill-fitting chair would be a work related injury, although it may be deemed self-inflicted.

Most chairs need to be manually adjusted to suit one’s body, which is all very well if you know what the ideal settings ought to be. If you do not well, you could ask your manager to see the health and safety representative. If you work from home, you are on your own. Well, let us put it this way, it is up to you to get the information and apply it yourself. The information is on the Internet. However, you could do away with all that and get a chair that automatically moulds itself to whoever is sitting down in it.

Sounds great, does it not? Very futuristic! In fact, the technology is already here and one of the chairs that has it built in is the Sum chair manufactured by Allsteel. It has won several important awards for its innovative design and ease of use. The chair boasts an automatically, self-adjusting system called AutoFit. AutoFit is responsible for supplying full support for your back by responding to your sitting pose and movements.

You cannot adjust the Sum chair incorrectly because it promises to do the job for you automatically. The arm rests are fully modifiable for width, length, depth and height. This is quickly accomplished and it is helpful if you have to move close to your desk without the arm rests getting in the way.

Another feature is the Avatar 2, weight-activated tilting mechanism. It will effortlessly, on your behalf, regulate itself to your seating position in one smooth movement. The Sum office chair takes the ‘need-to-know’ out of using an office chair properly.

Since it is self-regulating, it is perfect for an office where several people may sit in one chair during the course of the day and it saves having to train each new employee in the health and safety benefits of good posture and sitting correctly.

Treating Acne Scars

Acne scars are an awful reminder of the having suffered pimples or even acne before. They are unbearable because of their seeming permanence and their non-complimentary appearance. Normally speaking, acne scars are rather difficult to eradicate, but tissue regeneration is not unusual nowadays with all the amazing technological advancements.

Generally speaking, when referring to acne scars, we mean the healed lesions caused by an acne breakout. While most scarring is temporary and will probably disappear on its own over time, scarring from the more severe forms of acne can be permanent.

Acne scars can be prevented if the patient visits a doctor when it is in the incipient stage, especially if nodules or cysts accompany the red pustules on the skin’s surface. If the bouts of acne have marked your skin, you will have to approach the issue from a different perspective, which usually means surgery.

Laser resurfacing is one possibility of removing the damaged skin areas and stimulating the natural regeneration of the tissue beneath. This operation only requires local anaesthesia and can last between a few minutes and an hour depending on the extent of the problem.

Fractional laser therapy is one of the most recent methods of eliminating acne scars. It involves surgical intervention at deep skin layers. The therapy is better than both dermabrasion and laser resurfacing in terms of quality and involves a very reduced healing period. Nevertheless, fractional laser therapy is within the reach of only those few fortunate people, who can afford it, since it is the most expensive acne treatment available so far.

Sometimes, additional sessions are necessary to improve the condition of the superficial layers of skin, before they can tackle the deep level treatment of the acne scar. The doctor may inject collagen into the scarring in order to raise the normal skin level or she/he may suggest micro-dermabrasion for the very same purpose. Trying to perform chemical peels for acne treatment at home could be a bad idea given the risk of aggravating the condition by irritating the scars even further.

As for the forms of acne scars, they can be grouped by the way they look. Scarring can result because of an increase of tissue or due to a loss of tissue They both have an adverse impact on the way the face looks. Specialists’ evaluation of the nature of the scars is a very important factor in deciding on the adoption of one type of treatment or another.

Fashion and Ladies Golf Attire

I picked up one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ type magazines the other week and got to asking myself where these women actually live, who wear the golf apparel shown in women’s golf magazines? I have never seen women, not even the pros, dressed in such expensive and flamboyant clothes.

It’s easy to spend money kitting yourself out for golf: hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes all add up quickly, even if you shop at the sales. Then factor in equipment, bag and cart and you have to play quite often to keep the “CPU” – cost per use down to an acceptable level.

One glossy advert showed a beautiful model in really short shorts (as if that’s allowed on courses!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That comes to just about $1,500! I know that it would be impossible for me to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near a normal limit in my entire golfing life! Please don’t get me wrong – I do love clothes and I do really, really love shoes, but I could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as most people’s weekly wages.

Granted, you need comfortable golfing shoes that don’t look like an old pair of wooden clogs, but honestly, you will be able to buy less expensive and yet still trendy golfing shoes.

I have a couple of very stylish golfing outfits, although none of them are brand names. If I totalled up the cost of all of them, it would not come to the price of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I’d rather have several trendy outfits than one outrageously priced one.

If I were to wear a $1,500 outfit to play golf in, I would just be too worried about getting it dirty or sweating in it to play a decent game of golf.

Pool-Side Bars

December 2, 2010 by

Millions of families give garden parties every year, but pool parties are even better. You must have been to a pool bar in a hotel on holiday where one of the bars faces onto the water and there are seats in the water, usually totally submerged so that the drinkers can sit at the bar in the water and enjoy their drink. Imagine holding a party in your garden with a pool and an in-pool bar!

These bars are called pool bars or swim up bars and can be found in hotels, holiday complexes and the gardens of the well-to-do and the clever-with-their-hands.

It is doubtful whether anyone knows for sure where pool bars first appeared but they have been in the Caribbean, Portugal and Spain for a long time. I have also seen them on cruise liners.

The first option is to build, have built or purchase pre-formed. Then you can select the style that you like. If you are going to buy a kit and have the vendors install it for you, then you only have to make an appointment and a week later, the bar will be complete. If, however, you are going to use a local contractor or do-it-yourself, you will need a drawing, plan or design.

You will be able to get lots of ideas from the Net and you could download images of styles of pool bars that you like. You can download these images and print them off, but it is better to download them into a folder or onto a flash card or memory stick so that you have them all together and you can take them with you to discuss with friends, family and professionals.

It should not need to be pointed out that all the materials used in your pool bar should be impervious to and totally unaffected by water and chlorine, which is particularly corrosive. This usually leaves a choice of concrete, resin and stone.

Concrete being the cheapest and stone being the most costly material to use. If you go for concrete, you can have it covered with ceramic tiles. if you pick the correct ceramic tiles, it can look quite dazzling or yo could select riven stone tiles which would be cheaper than solid stone or slate.

If you would like some kind of entertainment at the bar such as a television or projector, this can be accomplished regardless of the amount of water, but you will need to call in an expert in these matters.

Otherwise, you could merely enclose the electronic devices in a box like a fish tank, but do not forget that electrical apparatus has to have ventilation, so you will require a few holes in the sides and a couple of fans driving air into the housing.

It is definitely not a problem to construct your own in pool bar and it ought to be a priority if you already have a pool.

Menopause And Weight Gain

November 11, 2010 by

Studies of women aged fifty and over show that most women in this age group are positive that their weight increase is connected with the menopause in their judgment. If you take into account the fact that some people might be using this as an justification and that others may not have made allowances in their diet for decreased levels of activity due to lifestyle alterations, it is still hard to account for why women in this age group tend to put surplus weight on different parts of the body, in particular the stomach, whereas any weight gained in younger women tends to be on the hips.

In fact, the reality is that hormonal changes do have a role to play in this phenomenon, although the process is not completely understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods end, and her body produces much lower levels of the female hormone estrogen, which is responsible for the ovulation process.

Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it is almost certainly the reason why women’s bodies change shape. While women of childbearing age accumulate fat in the lower body, after the menopause they store it on the abdomen instead, like men. This leads to a greater risk of heart disease.

At the same time, both men and women tend to find muscle turning to fat as they grow older and the metabolism slows down. This means that if you do not adjust your eating habits, you will probably find that your weight increases. A person of 60 just does not need as many calories as a person of 40.

Hormonal therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Many women will be astonished to hear that studies have shown that hormonal therapy does not result in weight increase. Some women experience bloating and water retention in the early stages of hormonal therapy but this is usually temporary.

Hormonal therapy can reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing the changes in storage of body fat around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. On the other hand, hormonal therapy has been linked with an increased risk of breast cancer in some studies.

If you find that you are gaining weight around the menopause, there are several things you can do.

Firstly, you should eat a healthy, low fat diet with plenty of fibre and avoid sugar.

Secondly, you need to take regular exercise. As people get older their physical activity levels naturally go down. Work frequently becomes less physically demanding, there are no kids to run around after, we take less active holidays and do things more slowly. Thirty minutes of moderate physical activity every day will help to balance out the effect of this.

Thirdly. you must preserve your muscle strength and mass. Use weights for arm muscles and walking or cycling for your legs.

Fourthly, try not to get worried about the alterations to the shape of your body. If you are not too overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, then don’t worry.

As customary, you ought to seek advice from your doctor before starting any exercise program, if you have any medical conditions or if your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms of the menopause and weight gain.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with how to lose weight online. If you have an interest in losing weight too, please go over to our website now at Why Can’t I Lose Weight? This article, Menopause And Weight Gain is available for free reprint.

Tips On Lake Fishing.

November 8, 2010 by

Lake fishing is fairly akin to river fishing, or slow-flowing river fishing anyway. The kinds of fish in rivers and lakes tend to be the identical, which means that the tackle, bait and lures will be the similar too, although you may require a longer fishing rod, say, a beach-casting rod to cast your bait further out into the lake. Lake fish will frequently mature to a larger size than river fish, so your line should be more robust too.

Lake fish conventionally been classed under three broad headings. Namely, game fish, food fish, and bait fish. Bass, trout, pike, pickerel, muskellunge, perch, etc., are recognized as game fish because of their sporting importance. Carp, suckers, some of the catfish, yellow perch, etc., are though of as food fish.

This latter group is not considered to provide the sport that the so-called game fish do, but they do have a genuine economic and sporting value. The third kind are the minnows and tiddlers that can be used as bait for the first two classes.

It is not simple to descibe the right technique to cast long distances, but it does come nuturally to quite a few fishermen. However, if casting does not come effortlessly to you, you will need to watch other lake or beach fishermen. If you are not happy doing that, you will be able to find a video on the subject. However, the best method to learn how to cast is to go down to the beach , watch an expert at work and try to do the same.

Nonetheless, lake fishing is enormous fun and the beginner will rapidly learn the correct method of lake fishing. Consequently, I have put a few practical tips here to help you learn lake fishing more quickly.

i]. Try to take up a smooth, whip-like cast. However, if you crack the whip too hard, you will certainly shake off a great deal of bait, flies or lures..

ii]. Timing is the all-significant factor in both the back cast and forward cast.

iii]. Study the lifestyle of the fish that reside in the lake that you intend to fish. All fish have both similar and dissimilar habits, so either obtain a book or video or join a club to learn more.

iv]. The majority of fish like some sort of cover, either for themselves or because their prey will like it there. Be careful of weeds, reeds and submerged logs or you will lose heaps of line and tackle..

v]. The same as I said previously, lake fish tend to be bigger, because food is copious and there is lots of room. A large bass, for example, can easily weigh 10-12 lbs, so make sure that your rod and line are up to the job. A rod of seven feet six inches to eight feet in length can take these sizes of fish.

Lake fishing is not so really different from other kinds of fishing, so if you put a little energy into learning the techniques and fish involved in lake fishing, you will soon master the skill and turn into an expert at lake fishing.

What Is The Atkins Grapefruit Diet?

October 11, 2010 by

The Atkins Grapefruit diet is a diet plan, not endorsed by the estate of Dr. Atkins, that hopes to play on the fame of the grapefruit diet and the Atkins diet name. However, a closer look at this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

First off, it’s pretty difficult to find information on the Atkins grapefruit diet plan. Clever people know that when someone is perpetrating a deception, or a con, they will often gloss over the facts. This is what the Atkins grapefruit diet seems to do in an attempt to get people to associate it with two supposedly effective diets.

Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet part of the Atkins Diet or support by the late Dr. Atkins’ company? The answer is a resounding no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any sort allowed in the list of allowed foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase either.

The induction phase includes the following foods: fish of all kinds; all fowl such as turkey and chicken; any shellfish; any meat such as beef or pork; eggs cooked in any style including fried; cheese; vegetables; herbs and spices; fats and oils; low carbohydrate beverages including diet soft drinks.

Please, notice one thing – that fruit does not feature on that list at all! Yes, later phases of the Atkins diet do allow small amounts of fruits such as cantaloupe and lemon juice, and the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases do even allow small quantities of grapefruit, but when judged in comparison with the amount of Grapefruit recommended on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet there is a huge difference.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet suggests a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most liberal phases of the Atkins diet recommends limiting intake to below 8 carbs per day, when it comes to grapefruit. That’s a direct contradiction from one plan to the other.

Most sensible people would turn to the Atkins website itself the moment they heard of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet and when they found no reference of that diet on their site, a red light would flash and an alarmbell would ring.

In general, remember this: any diet that relies too heavily on one food, such as grapefruit in a grapefruit diet, is unhealthy for any but extremely short periods. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is not associated with the Atkins diet, and may interfere with the results of the Atkins diet in its early phases.

Do you need to lose those excess pounds real fast? Well, take a free look at The Atkins Diet, by going to our resource called The Atkins Diet Plan This article, What Is The Atkins Grapefruit Diet? is available for free reprint.
