Will Hoodia Be Banned?

Hoodia gordonii is a popular weight loss supplement that has helped many people control their appetite and lose weight. Unfortunately, it is at risk of being banned by the FDA. Is it unsafe? Are we facing another ban such as the ban with ephedra?
Not exactly — ephedra use was implicated in the deaths of a few young women who used this strong, stimulant type appetite suppressant. They suffered cardiac complications and died. After evaluation, the FDA banned the sale of ephedra in the United States.
Will the weight loss industry see another loss? If they do, it will not have much to do with safety. In fact, it has far more to do with greed and the popularity of hoodia. Rather than acting as a strong stimulant to control appetite, hoodia works more safely. Hoodia makes the brain believe glucose levels are normal, and since low blood glucose is the cause of the hunger sensation, hunger is not triggered.
Although diabetics should check with their healthcare providers due to this effect on blood glucose, most people who consume diets high in refined carbohydrates may benefit from taking hoodia supplements. Often times, the brain begins signaling hunger at higher than normal rates when a person consumes mostly refined carbohydrates. They become hungry even though they do not really need to eat.
So, if hoodia is relatively safe and effective, why would the FDA be considering a ban? The problem is with a segment of the weight loss industry that are selling fake hoodia or tricking consumers into signing up for an auto-shipment program.
The frenzy over hoodia created a situation where legitimate companies were selling pure hoodia supplements at a premium price, and other companies low-balled the pricing. Unfortunately, this was not a situation where companies were seeking to make revenue via higher quantity of sales with lower cost per unit. Their profit margin swelled due to the actual product they were selling: fake hoodia.
Hoodia is expensive. The demand for this cactus grown in South Africa led to a diminished amount of hoodia. It is difficult to grow conventionally, and farmers have been unable to produce enough to meet demands. In fact, the hoodia cactus does not seem to grow very well outside its native habitat. Those who have tried to grow their own have realized it has a rather unpleasant odor meant to attract flies for pollination. In addition, it takes three years for the plant to reach a point for harvest.
With the popularity of hoodia, the cactus became scarce which lead to black market trade. The South African government had to step in to preserve the species and attempt to regulate the trade. A C.I.T.E.S certification is necessary (allowing legal trade between an entity and South Africa) to obtain pure hoodia. All of this, of course, caused the price of hoodia to sky rocket.
If you want to benefit from hoodia while you can, you should expect to pay a fair price for the product; fair in this case meaning a bit pricey. If you find cheap hoodia, it probably is not the real deal, or it contains such low amounts of pure hoodia, it will not be effective.

Is Acai Berry Better Than Blueberry?

The amazing acai berry has garnished quite a bit of attention. Acai supplements, extracts, mixes and juices are popping up all over the place. They might prevent cancer, heart disease and even slow aging and promote weight loss. It was not long ago that blueberries were the big superfood. Are acai berries really so much better?
They both contain a group of phytochemicals called anthocyanins. Plants contain various phytochemicals that help the plant fight disease, fungal infections and free radical damage. They help at the cellular level. So, we benefit from these protective factors when we consume the plants. The phytochemicals such as anthocyanins improve our overall health.
These phytochemicals also contribute to the plants characteristics such as color and aroma. The only bad news about acai berries is they are not found in the produce department. Blueberries are more available and can even be found for less in the frozen foods. If you want acai berries in your diet, you will have to fly to the Amazon or take a supplement. You probably want to steer clear of the juices due to high amounts of sugar or corn syrup. The small amounts of acai berry in these products do not counteract the ill effects of the sugar.
Truly, your best health maneuver is to eat a diet rich in fruits, veggies and whole grains. A variety of these items allows you to receive the benefits of various phytochemicals which work together in the body. One of nature’s miracles, acai berries are loaded in nutrients. They contain antioxidants, protein and many of the B vitamins. Phytochemicals, sometimes called vitamin P, are also present in acai berries. The phytochemical family in acai berries are called anthocyanins. Phytochemicals in plants protect the plant from disease and damage, and those protective properties are transferred to us when we consume the plant.
The nutrients in acai berries are capable of preventing diseases such as cardiovascular disease. They can aid in weight loss and slow the signs of aging. Much of this has to do with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory abilities of the nutrients.
The antioxidants fight free radicals, preventing the damaging affects at the cellular level. They also aid in repair and replenishment of cells and bodily tissue. Inflammation causes many disease processes such as atherosclerosis. It is also behind aging and plays a role in obesity. The anti-inflammatory action of acai berries may therefore prevent disease, slow aging and aid in weight loss.

The biggest fraud would be the “free trial” fraud. Acai berry supplements are offered as a free trial. The customer pays a minor shipping charge, so the company is given the person’s credit card information. Unbeknownst to the customer, however, they automatically sign up for future shipments. Their credit cards are charged for the shipment before it even arrives in most cases. Worst of all, you may end up fighting tooth and nail to get the charge removed and stop the auto-shipments. Most of these companies transfer call after call and keep people waiting on hold long before anything is remedied.
The weight loss industry (the crooked ones in the bunch!) have also honed in on acai berry. Yes, acai berries can aid in weight loss, but nothing exists that aids in healthful weight loss without proper diet and exercise. Take caution in ordering acai berries touted as being this magic bullet in weight loss.
It is unfortunate that the con-artists have given a bad name to such a wonderful gift from Mother Nature. In the end, you have to check websites carefully to make sure they have some sort of seal by the Better Business Bureau or other entity that checks a company’s authenticity and business practices. As well, make sure you read the fine print. Look for credible companies with pure acai berry supplements or products.

Is There a Way to Grow Your Own Hoodia?

Do you like to do things on your own? I do. I try to save money whenever possible. I would probably never hire a painter or a landscaper. I bake birthday cakes rather than buying them at the store.
I like to do things on my own to save money, but also because of the personal gratification of being a D.I.Y. (do it yourself) person. My latest endeavor was beating the weight loss industry at their own game. Rather than paying $60 for a bottle of hoodia appetite suppressants, I decided to try growing hoodia plants on my own.
Well, that was a bit of a mistake. I found out that hoodia is grown in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa and that it is a succulent. It can suppress your appetite because of a component called p57 contained in the hoodia plant. This component acts as glucose in the body, which staves off hunger by fooling the brain into thinking you do not need to eat. (Hunger is triggered by low blood glucose). Though I knew I could not develop a pill form of hoodia, I knew the natives in South Africa chew on the stems, so why could I not? Or perhaps make some sort of tea with the plant.
So, I ordered my hoodia seeds and special Kalahari sand. The sand cost more than the seeds and I knew why soon after I planted them. In just a few short weeks, my plants were getting bigger and looked nothing like a hoodia plant or anything like a succulent for that matter. They were marigolds! I would have been taken! I called the company, but after being put on hold for 30 minutes, I decided to part ways with my $20 and move forward.
I had already blabbed to everyone I knew that I was going to grow my own hoodia plants. I could not exactly back out now. Instead, I researched some companies and found authentic hoodia seeds and special sand. The seeds were pricey, but I was not going to let that deter me. You are thinking I should have just sprung for the $60 bottle of hoodia appetite suppressants, but I was determined!
This time, I had little plants growing with finger-like stems. Yes! Now that is what a succulent should look like. I showed off my hoodia babies to my friends and waited to see what would happen next. In about a month, I had little flowers on the plants. One would think this was a good thing, but it was not! It smelled like something died in my house! Another F.Y.I. about hoodia: the flowers are meant to attract flies to pollinate the plant.
I had to move them to the garage and rid my house of the stench (and the flies). Stinky or not, I had an obligation to my little hoodia plants. I did what I could, but they soon began to develop some sort of fungus. At first, I wondered if this was just another unpleasant hoodia characteristic, but no such luck. I found out that even professionals have difficulty growing hoodia. The crops succumb to a myriad of fungus and disease quite easily.
So, a few hundred dollars later, many flies and a stinky experience, my hoodia plants died! I expected a bit of teasing from my friends, but they just shook their heads. I think they were grateful my house did not smell like the morgue anymore. I tucked my tail and ordered my $60 bottle of hoodia. The up-side is that the hoodia actually works! I have lost five pounds!

The tribesmen in South Africa have been using hoodia gordonii for centuries as a means to stave off hunger while out on long hunts. They chew the stem of this native cactus, and when the weight loss industry discovered this, they scrambled to create a supplement to suppress appetite. The supplements are meant to help people lose weight by diminishing appetite.
Though this sounds like a great plan, can hoodia help you achieve your weight loss goals? Maybe and maybe not. First, you need to understand how hoodia works and then determine if it will benefit you. Will it help you bare your midriff on the beach or will you be stuck in the swimsuit that covers everything it can?
When you feel hungry, it is because your brain sensed lowered blood glucose levels, which caused it to trigger the hypothalamus to send out that hungry feeling. Hoodia contains a substance called p57 that acts like glucose in the body. It tricks the brain into thinking you do not need to eat, even when your blood glucose levels are low. Ultimately, this should help you meet your negative caloric requirement to facilitate weight loss.
Right of the get go, this means that diabetics should not take hoodia because keeping steady blood glucose levels is crucial to the management of their disease. Who else should not take hoodia?
Do you eat to satisfy an emotion? Do you use food as instant gratification? Do you eat compulsively and nibble on foods even though you are not hungry? Hoodia is not a cure-all, and if you eat for reasons beyond feeling hungry, it may not do you much good. Try to get a grip on emotional or compulsive eating, and then see if hoodia may help.
As well, women who are pregnant or nursing should not take hoodia; nor should children. Quite possibly! We eat loads of sugar in the form of overly processed refined foods, snacks and indulgences. White bread, pasta, white rice, cookies, crackers the list is endless! If much of your diet consists of these types of food, you may have skewed the way your body responds to blood glucose levels. The body tends to adapt to situations. It is a survival mechanism. Constant inundation of sugar in the blood stream leads the body to sense hunger at higher than normal blood glucose levels. You may be hungry and craving sugar because of this, not because you really need to eat. So, you end up overeating the wrong types of foods.
Ultimately, the only way to lose weight is to eat whole, clean foods in the right portions and exercise. However, if hoodia helps you kick your sugar habit, you might stand a better chance of conquering temptation and re-training your body to respond to the right levels of blood glucose.
